Wikis for Collaborative Learning

Another E-Learning tool that can be used to assist learning is a Wiki. A wiki is an online space where users and guests can edit, modify, add, and remove information. A personal wiki was made for this course, and my Wiki’s URL address is https://rebeccamunnselearning.wikispaces.com/. Wikis are different from blogs because of a number of features. Wikis are open, meaning any reader can edit information if it seems to be incomplete or poorly organised; whereas in blogs, readers can only add comments or suggestions to the end of content. Wikis also allow for sharing of ideas. Many users can use the same wiki to openly discuss concepts and ideas, while blogs are mainly based around an individual’s concept or idea. Wikis can be used in learning context as they allow for interaction and collaboration between students on whatever topic they happen to be studying at the time. Other students are then welcome to contribute to the Wiki to allow for idea sharing.

  1. Wikis are such a great learning tool, however I seriously think they need to be utilised more in a classroom. They are so versatile in the concepts of design and user input, which I think is great.

I also think the easy access for users to edit information is not as good as it sounds. It opens a lot of windows to your information being jeapordised by stupid users who can add incorrect or stupid information, as well as delete it.

I suppose you would have to trust the users of your wiki that they wouldn't ruin your work.
